Over the years, I have seen a national push toward helping girls build their confidence and instilling a healthy body image in them to combat body insecurities in girls. Based on Candace and other girls’ experiences, I suspect this is another campaign that, while well-intentioned, has different outcomes for black girls. Black girls like Candace have little room to embrace body positivity. When they do, people think these girls are parading their bodies and sexuality, thus bearing society’s centuries-old stigma of their bodies being agents of sexual sin. Mary’s earlier narrative exposes the lie that black girls are inherently promiscuous. She is an adolescent girl evolving in her physical, spiritual, and emotional being; however, the Jezebel mislabeling paints black girls like Mary as being fast and loose, erasing their innocence and forcing them to defend their own bodies’ existence.
